Proving Your English Language Level

Applicants wanting to work or Study in Australia must demonstrate having met the English language threshold requirements. There are 5 different levels of English (Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior) and the level required will depend on the subclass of the visa being applied for.

Importantly, if your current English Language level needs improving, you can apply to study two or more courses on your Student visa where there is clear progression from the English course to your main course. This is known as course packaging. Consequently, you can apply to study an English Language course before progressing to start your main course, and do all of this IN Australia.

If you are a Student Visa applicant, you do not need to provide your English test result at the time of your application but you do need to provide it before a decision is made on it (for this reason you should provide it at the time of your application).

Applicants meet the ‘Competent’ English language level if they hold a valid passport from, and are a citizen of, one of the following countries.

• United Kingdom (UK)
• Canada
• New Zealand
• United States of America (USA)
• Republic of Ireland.

ASC Migration recommends that Student Applicants take an IELTS Test as they have many test centres worldwide and they are recognised by the Department of Home Affairs. The test is not very hard and if you engage our services, we will provide further details regarding the exact test to take (General or Academic), the available test centres, and some other useful information.

However, the other test providers are also recognised by the Department. Specific information pertaining to the information provided for IELTS will be similar for other providers .

Please note that if you previously scored the threshold level in an English test (that is less than 3 years old), you will not need to undertake a further English test.
