APPLYING TO BECOME AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN

As a permanent resident, applying to become an Australian Citizen is one of the most important decisions that will be made for you or your family’s future.
There are various ways to qualify for Australian citizenship such as;

• Australian citizenship for immigrants
• Australian citizenship if you were born in Australia
• Australian citizenship if you were born overseas to a current or former Australian citizen parent
• Australian citizenship if you were adopted
• Becoming an Australian citizen again and Australian citizenship if you were born in Papua before 1975.

The requirement to become an Australian Citizen will vary according to each personal situation and there are many eligibility factors to consider such as;

• You need to have held a substantive visa (which is any visa except a bridging visa) on a temporary or permanent basis which allowed you to be legally in Australia for at least four years; (Note: if you first entered Australia on any temporary visa or a working holiday visa you will be eligible and;
• You have physically lived in Australia for at least three out of the last four years (cumulative) and;
• Australian citizenship if you were born overseas to a current or former Australian citizen parent
• You hold a permanent residency visa for at least the last 12 months and;
• You have not been out of Australia for more than 3 months in the last 12 months.
