VISA CHARGES WAIVED FOR STUDENTS AND WORKING HOLIDAY MAKERS

International students and working holidaymakers who arrive in Australia from today will have their visa application fees rebated.

International students will have the fees waived for eight weeks and 12 weeks for working holidaymakers.

The message from the Australian prime minister is “come on down – move all the way around the country and, at the same time, join our workforce.”

The Australian government wants an estimated 175,000 foreign students and working holidaymakers to come Down Under.

The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program allows “young adults to have a 12 month holiday, during which they can undertake short-term work and study” (up to 40 hours per week).

Students working (up to 40 hours per week) and being trained in health and aged care would, in particular, be “incredibly helpful” as the nation continues to grapple with the pandemic.

MORE WORK HOURS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Eligible Australian Student Visa holders may be able to work up to 80 hours a fortnight under a temporary relaxation of visa rules as there are currently 400,000 vacant positions Australia-wide, even before the current Omicron fuelled labour shortages.

Traditionally, international students in Australia had a 40-hour-per-fortnight work limit. This however is likely to be doubled to 80-hours-per-fortnight (40 hours per week)

This new concession is in addition to last July’s changes, that allowed supermarkets in states and territories subject to COVID-19 lockdowns to employ International Students in excess of the 40 hours per fortnight cap to help businesses remain open and to help supermarkets meet the high customer demand for critical goods.

Due to increases in staffing pressures, Australian student visa holders were also able to work more than 40 hours a fortnight in aged care and nursing.

AUSTRALIA NEEDS YOU

Whether you are a Skilled Tradesperson – a Professional – or a potential Business Visa applicant (a manufacturer, a current or potential business owner, or an entrepreneur) Australia is open for business.

As we start the new year, figures from last year alone show state Australia-wide 485,000 new jobs were created last year (in the middle of a pandemic) and as the economy continues its recovery, Australia is expected to outperform this.

However, 1,000’s of skilled migrants and professionals are needed to achieve this. Australia has one of the best performing economies in the world, with one of the highest vaccine rates in the world and, with very low hospitalisations the future is bright.
