AUSTRALIA’S UNEMPLOYMENT – ITS LOWEST LEVEL SINCE 1974

The Australian unemployment rate fell to the lowest level in almost 50 years with job vacancies also at an all-time high.

Australia’s unemployment rate at only 3.9% is the lowest in 50 years. The last time the unemployment rate was lower than this was in August 1974. Western Australia’s unemployment rate is at only 2.9%, which is the lowest in the country.

If you’re a skilled worker, the world really is your oyster right now. The global pandemic has caused widespread labour shortages, and demand for skilled staff is at its peak. The workforce shortage means skilled employees are in hot demand.

And, the skills needed are wide and diverse. From aged care workers to locksmiths, electricians to aviation engineers, pharmacists to ICT project managers, the National Skills Commission’s most recent priority skills list is rich with career diversity.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA WILL REOPEN ITS BORDERS FROM MARCH 3

The new date displays high confidence in WA as it readies itself to welcome back migrants and travellers given its high vaccination rates. Once the borders reopen, interstate travellers who are fully vaccinated (including a third dose if they are eligible) will be able to travel to WA without quarantining. All international migrants and travelers will be allowed back in, but those who are unvaccinated must spend seven days in hotel quarantine.

Australia’s unemployment rate is unchanged from a month earlier and remains at 4.2% with employment rising by 12,900 to a new record high of 13.26 million as part-time employment also increased 30,000 to 4,177,600.

The Labour Market.

Western Australia’s economic growth gathered pace in 2021 as the strength in Western Australia’s labour market continued with the unemployment rate falling from 3.8% in November 2021 to 3.4% in December 2021. This was the lowest unemployment rate of all states and territories in Australia.

The outlook for Western Australia’s labour market continues to be positive. Measures of job vacancies are shown at very high levels and increased economic activity has created strong competition for labour and skills across industries and new job opportunities.

Retail trade

Western Australia’s retail turnover continued to grow strongly in November 2021, supported by favourable labour market conditions and consumers diverting their spending from overseas and interstate travel into retail goods and services.

Construction activity

Western Australia has a large amount of a housing construction pipeline that will support building activity in Western Australia over the next 12 to 18 months.

Final investment decisions for a number of large gas projects in 2021, including the Scarborough Pluto Train 2 project, should support engineering construction activity over the next few years.

International trade

Western Australia exported $16.4 billion of goods in November 2021, 1.4% more than in October 2021 and 1.0% more than a year ago.

Western Australia also had 40,471 international student enrolments between January and November 2021.

AUSTRALIA’S INTERNATIONAL BORDER CLOSURE TO END

The international border is set to reopen on February 21 next.

Obligatory Requirements:

  • Migrants and travellers need to be fully vaccinated and/or have had two doses of a COVID vaccine to be allowed in and;
  • Any unvaccinated travellers will have to apply for, and be granted, an exemption before they travel to Australia

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said unvaccinated travellers would still need to apply for a travel exemption to come to Australia and need to undergo hotel quarantine if they were granted permission to enter the country.

The Australian Prime Minister also made it clear, with a reference to the recent Novak Djokovic saga, that even if people had the correct visa to enter Australia, if they were not fully vaccinated — or have an exemption — they would not be allowed to enter.

Australia has been and is experiencing enormous growth recently, and with a low unemployment rate of 4.2% (3.4% in Western Australia) you will have no problem in securing employment. The weather is beautiful, the people are great and your future outlook Down Under is looking very promising, so what are you waiting for?

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS AGAIN & NEW BORDER CONTROLS IN WA

Australia’s unemployment has dropped to its lowest rate in 13 years at 4.2 percent and Western Australia’s unemployment rate has dropped once again to the lowest in the nation at 3.4 percent.

Despite Western Australia’s new strict border controls, exemptions will be granted to people with ‘Critical Skills’ or those working in ‘Sectors’ in demand.

You have critical skills required to maintain the supply of essential goods and services (such as in medical technology, critical infrastructure, telecommunications, engineering and mining, supply chain logistics, aged care, agriculture, primary industry, food production, and the maritime industry) OR

You are delivering services in sectors critical to Australia’s economic recovery (such as financial technology, large scale manufacturing, film, media and television production, and emerging technology), where no Australian worker is available OR

VISA CHARGES WAIVED FOR STUDENTS AND WORKING HOLIDAY MAKERS

International students and working holidaymakers who arrive in Australia from today will have their visa application fees rebated.

International students will have the fees waived for eight weeks and 12 weeks for working holidaymakers.

The message from the Australian prime minister is “come on down – move all the way around the country and, at the same time, join our workforce.”

The Australian government wants an estimated 175,000 foreign students and working holidaymakers to come Down Under.

The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program allows “young adults to have a 12 month holiday, during which they can undertake short-term work and study” (up to 40 hours per week).

Students working (up to 40 hours per week) and being trained in health and aged care would, in particular, be “incredibly helpful” as the nation continues to grapple with the pandemic.

MORE WORK HOURS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Eligible Australian Student Visa holders may be able to work up to 80 hours a fortnight under a temporary relaxation of visa rules as there are currently 400,000 vacant positions Australia-wide, even before the current Omicron fuelled labour shortages.

Traditionally, international students in Australia had a 40-hour-per-fortnight work limit. This however is likely to be doubled to 80-hours-per-fortnight (40 hours per week)

This new concession is in addition to last July’s changes, that allowed supermarkets in states and territories subject to COVID-19 lockdowns to employ International Students in excess of the 40 hours per fortnight cap to help businesses remain open and to help supermarkets meet the high customer demand for critical goods.

Due to increases in staffing pressures, Australian student visa holders were also able to work more than 40 hours a fortnight in aged care and nursing.
